Sikkim is not just the most beautiful place in the world but cleanest and safest too. If once the charms of the State were limited to mists, mountains and colorful butterflies, they are now complimented by tangible development and progress. With its unique culture and natural landscape, Sikkim is landlocked in the Himalayas. It has the lowest population in the country and is the second smallest state in India after Goa in terms of area. Gangtok is the capital city in the state and also the largest in terms of area. The state is a major tourist hub in India and attracts a large number of tourists from across the world.
Kanchenjunga, which is the third highest peak in the world, is located in Sikkim. The state is rich in biodiversity, scenery and culture. The state was merged into India in 1975. It has been invaded in the past and lost major portions of lands to Nepalese invaders. The language widely spoken in Sikkim is Nepalese; other languages such as Tibetan and Dzongkha are also spoken by some people. Hindi is used as a second language and English is used as the official language.

Best Time To Visit SikkimSikkim is a year around destination with beautiful lakes, hill stations and wildlife. One can visit Sikkim during the summer season and just before starting of the winters. The best time to visit Sikkim is between March to June and September to December.
By Air
Sikkim does not has its own airport. The nearest Airport is Bagdogra (near Siliguri) in West Bengal, which lies only 125 km away from Gangtok the capital of Sikkim. Bagdogra is connected to cities like Delhi and Kolkata by regular flights.
By Train
Sikkim does not have any rail network in its boundary. The nearest Railways Station is New Jalpaiguri (near Siliguri), which is connected to Gangtok by road. New Jalpaiguri boasts of an extensive rail network with major Railway Stations in India, such as Kolkata, Delhi. It is also conveniently linked to the cities of Northeastern India like, Guwahati.
By Road
Although the state of Sikkim lies at the foothills of the Himalayas, it has a good network of roads. Sikkim can be entered through northern areas of West Bengal. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri are directly connected to Gangtok and other cities of the state. But during the monsoon seasons sometimes, landslides create temporary problems in road transport.
